It's a common complaint, an annoying situation, even a man's worst nightmare.

You know what I'm talking about: When a girl you like wants to be "just friends."

Aaaaargh! Who wants that? You like this girl, you want intimacy, but all she wants is friendship. How do you turn things around? In short, you have to make a girl REMEMBER you. Whereas guys who are much more than friends are always on a woman's mind, friends are just...there. There's no special emotion connected to them. They're just...friends.

So how do you change this?

Let's start with the basics: What do women want in a romance? Well, if you've read my previous blog post (and if you haven't, do it now!), you know that women are looking for STAND-UP GUYS, guys who mean business and don't take no for an answer. They want a protector, a defender, a man who will always be at their side. Now ask yourself: Is that me?

If you're the kind of guy who avoids conflict, treats women with deference and worship, jumps at the opportunity to listen to her moan...

Then you're a nice guy. You don't stand up for yourself. You don't assume leadership. You sit down when a woman wants you to jump up and save her butt!

So it seems, nice guys always finish last. They end up in the friend zone, instead of the BED zone.

But does it have to be that way?

NO! You just have to make one change that will forever transform your game. I'm not talking about becoming a bad boy; you can be a stand-up guy without being a jerk. Stand-up guys are just good guys who give women the same things they love about bad boys-without beating girls up and treating them like trash.

I'm talking about bringing to the table the one thing girls love. The one thing bad boys-and stand-up guys-have that nice guys just don't. The difference between nice guys and STAND-UP guys can pretty much be summarized in one word: attitude.

The stand-up guys, the guys who are MORE than just friends, bring ALPHA ATTITUDE to the table. They bring confidence, swagger, independence, and centered-ness around them. Whereas nice guys revolve their worlds around pleasing and being nice to women, stand-up guys revolve their world around themselves. They're on a path, a mission, and if a woman doesn't want to join them, it's her loss. But if she does want to join him, she better recognize that his world, is her world. Not the other way around. If a girl is "just friends" with you, she probably doesn't take you seriously enough. Or, you haven't shown her you're serious enough about HER for her to make a move herself.

So how do you change things so that your female friend/acquaintance/secret crush will be attracted to you?

When talking to singles there is one theme that I often hear "I would like to be in a relationship BUT I don't have the time". This is particularly prevalent for the 40 something age group. Recently I asked a client to list her life goals in terms of priorities and relationships came 6th. She found this quite a revellation especially as I was working with her as a relationship coach.

Old habits - last minute

Old habits die hard. Most of us have been brought up with a last minute attitude. This orginated in our education system where external deadlines were what we were aiming at. Let's face it in the main we are not taught to plan our lives very effectively.

So we get used to back loading our tasks and activities. I have all these things to do and not much time so I don't need to think about this until the week before the deadline. Then the adrenaline kicks in and we push ourselves to the finishing post often accompanied by a lot of anxiety and stress. I have termed this kind of behaviour the 'deadline junkie'. You know that it would be better to arrange your life differently but somehow you are caught in a treadmill.

Relationship Time - speed-dating / internet dating / bar culture

How is this translated into the dating scene? Well we have all seen the ballooning of speed-dating, internet dating and the bar culture. These ways of meeting potential dates and finding relationships has become part of the 21st century culture because of peoples' percieved lack of time. If you perceive yourself as having little time then you look for the 'fastest' and most efficient way of doing things.

After all you meet a lot of people in a very short amount of time. This way of looking at dating and finding relationships is the 'numbers game' attitude. The more people I meet the more likely I am to meet someone who is for me. Well I would like to dispel the myth, it is not about numbers but essentially about quality and fit. How can you go about being more effective in finding quality and fit in dating and relationships?

Creating space and balance for relationships and dating

Creating space and balance in life sounds like an old cliche. BUT by being more pro-active in planning and taking steps to find more qulaity time for ativities you will be more likely to find quality relationships.

For a week note down hom much time you spend on the following activities: work,family/friends, dating activity (including all those hours on the internet), health, home, personal development plus any other major activity. Now think about the efficiency of these activities.

Research into relationships has shown that you are much more likely to meet someone if you are involved in an activity in which you both have a strong interest. This is not hanging about bars or speed-dating but something like off-road biking, photography, salsa dancy, volunteering etc. Whatever the activity that interests you, if at all possible something you are passionate about, then not only will you be balancing your life BUT be putting yourself in a situation where you are more likely to meet prospective quality dates.

Take the Time for Relationships

There are a lot of sites and articles relating to online dating. The pros and cons, the great love matches and the dating horror stories. I know quite a few people who have pursued this avenue when looking for Mr. or Ms. Right. How about some tips on dating if online doesn't work for you?

Some of the people I talked to have had average success and are still pursuing the "perfect partner" online give or take a few flaws. Others I know have tried it and felt it was not quite for them and moved onto other avenues of meeting someone. Many of my friends found that despite all the tips on dating available online, the people they eventually met had not been totally honest in their representations.

Meeting someone that you want to form a relationship with can be difficult. People move around quite often for work and getting connected in a new area can seem quite daunting. When you are heading toward middle age and maybe find yourself single after a divorce you can feel confused as to where to start. It can seem like a whole new world out there in today's dating scene.

After a certain age the bar scene doesn't quite cut it and if you are not a drinker it certainly isn't a great choice. It's tough to try and get to know someone in a noisy crowded atmosphere. Perhaps your old group of friends has scattered or worse yet, you are currently the only single person in your crowd.

The following are some of the successful tips on dating I have received from friends who have faced the same situation and were successful at meeting new friends and possible romantic partners.

1. Get involved in something in your community. Volunteer. Volunteering brings many people together for a unified purpose. It could be a community project or sometimes there are places such as the humane society (if you are an animal lover). If you happen to be a parent, the school is always looking for volunteers. Just check your local paper. It is a great resource for finding what's going on in your town and where they could use some help.

2. Join a club. Again the local paper will list different clubs, some designed expressly for singles. Find something that interests you and jump right in. If you change your mind later and feel it isn't right for you, move on to something else. At least this way you are in the process.

3. There are often some adult recreational sports that are fun and you get your exercise as well. This particular one worked for me. I had joined an adult recreational volleyball league after my divorce and met the man who eventually became my second husband.

4. I have a few friends who have taken evening classes at the local college or through adult education and met people they were interested in. It's always easier to strike up a conversation when you know that you and the other person already share a common interest.

5. Don't be afraid of having your friends set you up on a blind date. Hopefully they at least know a little about your likes and dislikes and will keep that in mind as they make a recommendation. Either way try to keep an open mind and just treat as good practice for the next person that comes into your life.

These are just a few tips on dating to consider if you find yourself a little ill at ease with online dating. Without a doubt, dating online has worked for many people but it may not be the best answer for everyone.

Online Dating profile: Do's and Don'ts

Creating a great profile means selling your greatest strengths and attributes. Like creating your personal resume. Most reputable online dating sites provide a multiple choice matching as well as a brief description of yourself and what you are looking for.  After someone finds his or her "match", it is your description of yourself that makes you shine.

So take your time and fill in your description completely, Two to three sentences are considered perfect. You can always come back to your description later to update it People who don't fill out their descriptions properly are not taken seriously and often get passed on for other profiles that look more genuine. Be honest in your ad.

Describe yourself accurately and most important honestly. Include real data like your height, body type, weight and educational background.  Show your personality.   Talk about hobbies, activities you enjoy, movies, interests, books, or music you enjoy, do you like to travel, (don't disclose your place of employment.... keep it general: I am a nurse, an accountant, etc).  Don't give away too much information...just write enough to spark an interested. Teen dating is something many parents fear. What if their child does something that they should not be doing? What if their child gets involved with the wrong type of people? Even worse, what if something bad happens when they are out on a date? Teen dating is worrisome, but there are things that you as a parent can do to provide your teen with the freedom that they need and providing them with the protection they do not know they need. Here are some tips to help you with this.

* Educate your child about the dangers that are out there. Do not assume that they know what to do when they are in a bad situation. Help them to come up with excuses for bad situations so that they can find their way out without any trouble. For example, if they are being asked to use illegal drugs, help them to develop a way to say no to it without being the odd one out. For example, they could say that they tried it before and just didn't like it. Giving them the help they need now can help them when you can not be there.

* Make sure they know they can talk to you. For girls, make sure they can come to you and actually ask you questions. If you are approachable, the child is more likely to come to you. If they think you will be mad, disappointed or grounding them, they won't come to you at all. Then, you'll be in the dark. Instead, keep the doors of communication open and they will come to you when they need to.

* Set the ground rules about dating. Don't limit them to what they can and can not do too much, but let them know what you expect from them. For example, you refuse to allow them to go to any parties. This will cause them to do it anyway in spite of what you said. But, if you tell them there must be a parental chaperone, they will mind you more so. Set curfew times as well, but allow them the ability to be out until they are not allowed to be. Many cities have curfews in place as it is.

There is not doubt about it, as a parent the day your daughter or son starts dating is the day that your child starts to get out into the world on his own. Yet, it does not have to be worrisome when you know that you can trust your child and your child knows that you trust them to make the right choices. These things can provide you both with the peace of mind you need when it comes to teen dating.

A romantic date is a date that both of you leave behind the stresses in your life and find time to think only about you two. This is challenging because life is hectic, there is so much to do and little time to do it in. If you are dating and usually grab dinner and a movie and call it done, you may be boring your potential partner to death. This makes it quite difficult to find something romantic to do. Yet, when the pressure for romance is on, there are many things that you can do.

Here are some tips for a romantic date.

* Take some time to be alone. Don't spend your dates with many people around you. Instead of going to a restaurant, make dinner at home, set up some beautiful candles and flowers and have a nice dinner alone.
